Chicago Lakeside Development
McCaffery Interests, in partnership with U.S. Steel, sought to redevelop the former Southworks site into an exciting lakeside community. The colossal scale of the site and proximity to downtown (9 miles) along with its lakeside location made it one of the most desirable pieces of undeveloped real estate in the City of Chicago, if not the nation.
In cooperation with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP and Sasaki Associates, Inc., the team created an award-winning master plan which included zoning approvals for approximately 13,575 single family dwellings and high-rise units, 17,500,000 SF of retail, the newly extended South Lake Shore Drive, 125 acres of open space/parks with bike paths, a 1,500-slip boat marina, and a new high school. The redevelopment anticipated to provide an economic boost to the City and to revitalize the historic South Shore. Lakeside is located between 79th and 87th Street on the shore of Lake Michigan.
The Lakeside master plan targeted LEED-ND certification, distinguished by large open spaces, excellent connectivity, access to public transportation/bike paths and compact walkable neighborhoods.
